Of the main challenges against the translation of tissue-engineered grafts is the lack of enough oxygen in thick tissues known as hypoxia. Interestingly, there is a category of materials that generate oxygen. In a recent study, a bioink of methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) comprising calcium peroxide as the oxygen-generating material has been developed. It has been demonstrated that this material is capable of generating oxygen homogenously in the graft which consequently improves the viability of encapsulated cells.
